Spike Spends Saturday With is a new series in which VBS’s creative director Spike Jonze tags along with different people for a day to get a better sense of them and what they do with their weekends. In this episode Spike visits Kanye West in the editing studio where he’s putting some finishing touches on the video for “Can’t Tell Me Nothing,” directed by Hype Williams. He chats about lyrical inspiration and his perfectionist tendencies.

in der LA times spricht common über den wandel im hip hop von bling zum understatement. jetzt finde ich zwar gucci und co nicht weniger bling als ice, aber das ist eben die vorstellung von understatement in den USA.
I think it’s great that [bling] is gone,” he said. “That really didn’t exemplify style. It was just like, ‘I have the money to buy this.’ And that ain’t what style’s about. . . . I think good style is about having an eye for quality things and putting them together so they have a feel and integrity and flavor.”

ok, manuva wird langsam nervös und spührt die aufregung und vorfreunde… hier schon mal das snippet zum neuen all mighty mos def album the ecstatic. und ich muss zugeben, dass es mich wirklich hoffen lässt. vor allem seine beatauswahl. denn die ist ja bei einam rapalbum für mich immer noch der grundstein, das basement souzusagen. es kann der rapper noch so gut sein, die lyrics noch so auf den punkt, aber wenn mir der beat nicht gefällt wird es bei mir schwer. deswegen hat zB auch das zweite talib album bei mir nicht funktioniert. das mos aldbum wird sehr analog, sehr samplelasstig. teilweise verwendet er minutenlage loops… wie das rechtlich gehen soll, frag ich mich? aber wahrscheinlich kann man sich das clearen heutzutage wieder leisten bei den geringen verkaufszahlen und erwartungen…
